I remember the last time this country went through economic problems as a result of gasoline and related products reaching an all time high in the early 1980s. Times were tough, food costs were high, jobs were scarce. Here we go again. But do you understand or remember how this country made it through the last 'gasoline disaster'? Yep, we learned how to feed alcohol to our vehicles and reduce the barrels of oil needed. Farmers in the Midwest fueled their farm equipment with alcohol distilled from the waste in the bottom of the silo. It was mostly wood alcohol, very bad for animals and humans to drink, but vehicles loved it. To use straight alcohol in a vehicle means resetting the carburetor. Producing your own alcohol for fuel use means getting a license from your State for that purpose. My point here is we don't have to have gasoline, we can run our vehicles on 'moonshine'. This is legal with the proper licenses. Not much good for your highway vehicle if you often travel farther than one tank of fuel will reach. Motor vehicles _do not_ take kindly to switching back and forth between gasoline and alcohol/ gasohol. Using alcohol as a fuel means also changing the fuel filter often as the alcohol cleans the trash out of the vehicles system. Using grains that could be used for human food or livestock feed to make alcohol for vehicle fuel is some what foolish. Vehicles don't need grain alcohol, they will run nicely (once changes are made to the carburetor system) on wood alcohol. Wood alcohol can be made from all kinds of 'waste' products. Grass cuttings, waste wood and saw dust, autumn leaf drop, possibly also old newspapers (any type waste with a carbon base should work) can make wood alcohol. The biggest difficulty in creating your own alcohol for fuel would probably be setting up a safe still system. An improper still results in conditions that go boom in rather drastic manners. When the farmers started making their own fuel, the gasoline prices started to fall. The oil companies do not want us to realize we could do with out many of their products. Right now the oil companies have us by the short and curlies. It is long past time to remove their grip. If every or most vehicle drivers in this country were to use home brew alcohol then another difficulty arises. Right now in the good US of A, road tax is incorporated into the gasoline price at the pump. Road tax would need be figured in another manner to keep the roadways healthy, not that the roads are in all that grand a shape at the moment.
