Not only are public libraries life savers in depression times, because they have a tradition of allowing poor people to come in just to rest and keep warm, maybe staying open until like eleven o'clock at night; but they great for resources. 1. They have bulletin boards with information about such things as jobs at all the levels, from city to state to federal, and the application forms. 2. Public libraries are unique, because they try to be of service to people in ways that are not just about books. They can help with information about programs like Job Corp, adult education, child care, and help organizations. 3. And of course libraries have the books and newspapers that people need to help themselves. Need a job? Go to a public library and look in the ads of newspapers all around where you are. 4. Libraries also have computers you can use when away from home. So if you finally find your way down from the hills or out of the desert and into town, you can just make your way to the library and its resources. What I've been doing lately is use the Inter-Library Loan program of the city where I am, and ordering books from other libraries, if not otherwise available. I've even learned that the other libraries around, like university and community college libraries, also are full of resources you can use, even check out, if you have a public library borrower's card. Now, you may think I'm through telling the tricks I know about using the library, but I'm not. Right now I have before me a book I picked up at the library from the FREE shelves, it's a novel, Survival Games, by Charles Gaines. It could be a turkey, but I have found some really great books in the Discarded pile, including a set of Britannica Encyclopaedia. It occurs to me that having something to read in your backpack might be useful for recreation, even though reading may be low-level priority. bookburn
